Cape Town announces itself with geology. Table Mountain—that flat-topped massif that dominates the skyline—appears in so many views that it becomes almost a character. When the "tablecloth" of clouds spills over the edge, the effect is theatrical. The mountain defines the city's shape: the bowl of the central business district, the sprawl along the Atlantic seaboard, the suburbs climbing the lower slopes.

The architecture tells a complex story. Dutch Colonial and Cape Dutch styles—whitewashed walls, thatched or tin roofs, gables with curves and flourishes—appear in the oldest neighborhoods. In the city center, art deco buildings from the 1930s stand beside modern glass. The color palette is distinctive: whites and creams, blues that echo the sea, the green of the mountain's vegetation. The light is sharp and clear, with fewer particles in the air than in Northern Hemisphere cities.

Cape Town sits at the meeting of two oceans, and the water is rarely out of view. Look for the distinctive shape of Lion's Head, the curve of Camps Bay, the harbor with its working waterfront. The flora is unique—fynbos, proteas, the silver trees—and appears even in urban plantings. Street signs use both English and Afrikaans. When you're guessing, trust the mountain. If you see that flat top, you're almost certainly in Cape Town.
